Your first month: what is normal
5 min read
Week 1: settling
Plants have been moved, so a few leaves may droop or brown. Keep it in bright shade and leave it alone.
- Do not water unless the soil is clearly dry.
- Fog on the glass in the morning is healthy.
Weeks 2 to 3: the mould flush
A little white fuzz is common as the ecosystem finds its balance. Remove it with tweezers and air the jar for an hour a day. A springtail clean-up crew solves it for good.
Week 4: finding the rhythm
By now you can read it: heavy streaming water means vent it; no condensation at all means a light mist. Add a diary entry each week so you can see the pattern.
When to worry
- black, mushy stems that smell
- mould that returns within a day of cleaning
- water pooled over the soil
