Springtails and isopods: your clean-up crew
4 min read
What they do
Springtails graze on mould and decaying leaves. Isopods (woodlice) chew through dead plant matter and waste. Together they replace much of your cleaning.
How to add them
- Tip the culture onto bark or moss, not directly on wet soil.
- Add a few leaves of dry leaf litter as food and shelter.
- Give them two weeks to build up.
Looking after them
They need humidity and something to eat. A pinch of fish flakes or a slice of cucumber once in a while is enough. Avoid insecticides and strong cleaners.
